We choose a quotation for what it contributes to a question. Before including it, we also keep the information needed to find it.

Our preparation sheet

  • The selected passage
  • The document's name and author
  • The relevant section or page
  • The available link
  • Context needed to understand it

This sheet remains an editorial aid. It helps explain why the passage appears in our article.

Distinguish the voices

In the final text, we separate quoted words from our paraphrase and commentary. If we shorten a passage, we reread its context before retaining that version.

Make checking easier

Our aim is to let readers return to the document. When complete access is unavailable, we explain what was actually consulted rather than implying a broader reading.
